Nakano for a monthly stay: choose the right train

Nakano is a useful Tokyo base if your regular trips fit either JR or the Tozai line. Before comparing journey times, check which railway each result uses. The line matters as much as the destination displayed on the train.

Tokyo Metro’s route information shows Nakano at the western end of the Tozai line. Its fare and journey table gives Nakano to Otemachi on that line as about 20 minutes. Add the walks at each end to estimate your commute.

Use the route, not just the destination board

For work around Otemachi or Nihombashi, follow the Tozai route on the map. For another destination, run a separate search rather than assuming the first eastbound train from Nakano serves it.

The practical mistake to avoid is choosing a train because its final destination looks familiar. Some trains continue onto another railway line, so the destination on the board may be beyond the section you need. Confirm the line and the next stations before boarding.

Do the same for the trip home. Save a route to Nakano for your normal finish time and another for a late evening. If a journey involves a connection, the last useful departure may be earlier than the last train shown for the first leg.

For a month-long stay, count the walk inside the station as part of the commute. The apartment nearest a station boundary may not be nearest the entrance you actually use.

The north-side shopping route is part of the appeal

North of the station, Sun Mall and Nakano Broadway are useful starting points for exploring the shops.

If you are interested in Broadway’s specialist shops, being able to visit briefly can be more useful than setting aside a whole sightseeing day. For living here, make a separate list of ordinary needs: groceries, a pharmacy, laundry if required and a few dinner options.

Try those errands on the route from the station to your candidate apartment. A place beyond a shopping street may suit you better than one that requires doubling back across the station every evening. A covered stretch is helpful in rain, but check where the cover ends and what remains before the front door.

If you tend to finish work late, check when your dinner and grocery options close.

A December station opening changes the route you should measure

Nakano ward’s 7 July 2026 announcement schedules the western station facilities and north–south passage to open on 6 December 2026. It describes new lifts connecting platforms and the surrounding plazas.

If your stay crosses that date, compare the existing route with the planned route. A west-side apartment may look farther from an existing entrance than it will from the new one, but a November arrival still needs the entrance open then. Ask for directions from the station when you enquire about the apartment. Check the railway’s latest opening notice before relying on the new entrance.

If you’ll need a lift, follow that route all the way to the platform. It may be longer than the shortest walk shown on a map.

Compare both sides of the station without guessing about noise

North and south are starting points for a map search, not reliable labels for quiet and lively apartments. Look at the road below the bedroom, the direction of the windows and any businesses sharing the building.

If you can visit the apartment, spend time in the bedroom with the window closed, then open. If you cannot, ask for a current video recorded from that room and a description of nearby work or construction. A street photograph alone cannot establish what you will hear indoors.

When Nakano makes sense for your month

Nakano belongs on your shortlist when its train routes fit your recurring plans and you like having shopping close to the station. The distinctive advantage is the combination: you can compare a JR journey with a direct Tozai journey from the same neighborhood.

Suppose your preferred apartment adds five minutes of walking each way but removes a connection that takes eight minutes each way. In that illustrative comparison, you add ten walking minutes per round trip and remove sixteen transfer minutes, saving six minutes overall. Replace those assumptions with your own complete routes before rejecting an apartment because its station walk is longer.
